MELTING AND CASTING
The facility is unique in that it is at present the only facility in South Africa that has ability to do vacuum casting.
The vacuum furnace was modified to be able to melt Ti alloys. The titanium investment casting capability was demonstrated successfully but would require investment in a skull melting furnace to make the process economically viable. The team continues to develop the current technology, but commercialisation of the capability can only be realised with significant investment in the latest generation infrastructure
